Dear Emad,

An active verb or sentence has the person or thing doing the action as its subject. For example: The boy kicked the ball, the verb kick is active.

When the doer of the action is not important to be mentioned or less important, or the focus is on the person or thing acted upon, we use passive voice. For example: The ball was kicked or the ball was kicked by the boy.

Dear Arif,

The passive tense is always a past participle. For example: In the sentence "I was given a book" or  "The city was destroyed"

In the passive sentense, the subject receives the action. For example: The door was broken by the policeman.

We use it for two reasons:

1. When the doer of the action is not important.

2. When we want to draw our attention to the person or thing acted upon.

 Note: Passive structure can be used in all kinds of tenses.
