Is e-Learning Right for Me?
Only you can know...
The answer to this question depends a great deal on what type of learner you
are. Many students need the face-to-face interaction of the classroom. Others
prefer to work in small study groups. Some prefer to work alone. Others need to
hear the information over and over again to retain it. Which type of learner
are you? Only you can determine this. We can say for certain that e-Learning
is not right for everyone.
Answer the following questions to help determine if e-Learning is right
for you.
- Why do you plan to take online classes?
- Do you have good time-management skills?
- Are you self motivated?
- Are you comfortable with computers?
- Will you take your online classes as seriously
as you would those taken on campus?
- Do you think classes offered online will be as
difficult to successfully complete as those offered
on campus?
- Is your computer located in an area were you
will be able to focus on your class work without
interruptions?
- Do you understand that online classes can take
10+ hours per week to successfully complete?
- Do you possess strong reading, writing, and
critical-thinking skills?
- Are you comfortable asking for help?
If you answered ‘yes’ to questions 2 through 10 you
probably have a good understanding of what it takes to
be successful taking classes online.
A: This is an important
question. And, we’ve identified the key attributes of
successful online learners.
First, it’s essential to be an experienced
user of computers, the Internet, real-time Internet
chat, eMail, computer-based CD-Roms, and word
processing software—and have access to a computer
and modem.
Next, online learners need to be
self-motivated, and good at written communication.
Lastly, the student must be willing to
commit 10 to 15 hours per week to studying, and
believe that high quality learning can take place
without going to a traditional classroom.
If this sounds like you, you’re probably a good
candidate for eLearning!
